PRIVATE LESSONS | ALL LEVELS
£180 for 4 learning hours (materials included*)
Learn the basics of cyanotype printing with me at my home studio in Crystal Palace, South-East London!
Sessions will follow a basic structure – how to mix chemistry, coat paper and expose handmade negatives and/or objects – but with lots of room to personalise and tailor to you and the areas you are most interested in. Ideal for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills and knowledge.
WHAT IS CYANOTYPE?
Cyanotype is a beautiful and simple photographic process that uses basic chemistry, light, and water to create rich blue, monochromatic images. Objects or negatives are placed against the pre-coated light-sensitive surface which is exposed to UV light. The areas where light reaches become blue when developed in water. It’s a reliable, accessible process that also leaves plenty of room for novelty and the unexpected.
The process has origins in science and learning, first used by botanist Anna Atkins in England in the 19th century to document algae and plant specimens, creating what is considered the first book published with photographic illustrations—Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions—in 1843. Later, architects and engineers used the technique to create scaled reproductions of technical drawings, that we know as ‘blueprints’. It is now having a resurgence amongst contemporary artists.
WHAT WE’LL LEARN
We will go through the process step by step. I’ll demonstrate each stage and be on hand to guide throughout.
Measuring and mixing the chemistry
Exploring different types of paper and choosing the right paper for your image
Coating the paper and the creative choices that can be made at this early stage
Finding the correct exposure time
Exposing objects, drawings and handmade marks to create an image
Developing your prints
Aftercare tips for drying, storing, and preserving your prints
(We can also discuss variations like printing on fabric or unique papers).
You’ll leave with a handful of your own small prints, a step-by-step guide (with troubleshooting) to take away, and a list of recommended suppliers to help you get started and confidently printing at home in the garden, at the park….
WHAT’S PROVIDED
The raw chemistry, paper, and objects to experiment with. Full access to all the equipment and tools. Light refreshments.
WHAT YOU COULD BRING ALONG
You are welcome to bring any personal objects or materials you would like to experiment with, any fabric, papers etc. you would like to try. Maybe some lunch depending, and come wearing rough clothes (it’s not very messy, but just in case!).
THE STUDIO
Once a garage, now a bright, fully equipped workspace for cyanotype printing, my studio is on the ground floor of the small block of flats where I live, on a quiet street in Crystal Palace, South London. Barn doors open out into the garden and in the summer there’s lots of space to print outside. I have a small exposure unit for all-weather use indoors (up to around A4) and there is heating in the cooler months.
ABOUT ME
I have been printing cyanotypes for over 10 years and have taught many group workshops and one-to-ones over the years, at Bainbridge Print Studios, the Art Academy and independently. I graduated from the Fine Art BA at Chelsea College of Arts in 2013 and currently sustain an art practice whilst working full time for an arts charity providing affordable art studios in London.
